Τα όνειρα είχαν συναρπάσει από καιρό τον Φρόυντ. Υπάρχουν αναφορές σε αυτά και στις σχετικές ιδέες του, σε επιστολές του ως σπουδαστής ακόμα. Από τα 1890 που άρχισε να θεραπεύει τους ασθενείς του με την επαναστατική νέα θεραπεία (που δεν την είχε ονομάσει ακόμα «ψυχανάλυση») και χρησιμοποιώντας τους ελεύθερους συνειρμούς σε κανονική βάση, παρατήρησε ότι με μεγάλη συχνότητα οι ασθενείς του ανάφεραν τα όνειρά τους.

Τα όνειρα, που εμφανίζονται όταν είμαστε κοιμισμένοι και η συνειδητή λογοκρισία και η καταστολή είναι λιγότερο άγρυπνες, φάνηκαν στον Φρόυντ σαν μια πλούσια πιθανή πηγή υλικού που υποστήριζε τις αναπτυσσόμενες θεωρίες του, περί του ασυνείδητου. Ταυτόχρονα ο ίδιος περνούσε από μια επίπονη περίοδο ενδοσκόπησης και αυτό-ανάλυσης που ήρθε σε ένα σημείο κρίσης με το θάνατο του πατέρα του Jacob το 1896. Κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου υπέβαλε τα όνειρά του σε προσεκτική διερεύνηση. (Διάφορα όνειρα που συζητιούνται στο περίφημο βιβλίο του "Η ερμηνεία των ονείρων" είναι του ίδιου του Φρόυντ, αν και δεν τα προσδιορίζει σαν δικά του στο βιβλίο.) Ένα σύνθετο όνειρο, γνωστό ως "η ένεση της Irma", το οποίο ονειρεύτηκε μένοντας στο Schloss Bellevue έξω από τη Βιέννη το 1895, ήρθε να φανεί ως κεντρικής σπουδαιότητας στην όνειρο-θεωρία του όταν το αναγνώρισε ως εκπλήρωση μιας ασυναίσθητης επιθυμίας.

Σε μια επιστολή στον Fliess πέντε έτη αργότερα, ο Φρόυντ αστειευόμενος αναρωτιόταν για τη δυνατότητα τοποθέτησης μιας πινακίδας στον τοίχο του κτηρίου που να σηματοδοτεί την περιοχή όπου του αποκαλύφθηκε το μυστικό των ονείρων. Σαράντα έτη μετά από το θάνατό του αυτό έγινε πραγματικότητα όταν μια τέτοια πινακίδα τοποθετήθηκε πράγματι στο Schloss Bellevue!

Οι κεντρικές ιδέες Φρόυντ για τα όνειρα ενσωματώνονται σε ένα από τα περισσότερα διάσημα βιβλία του, την "Η ερμηνεία των ονείρων". Ουσιαστικά αναπηδούν από εκείνη την κεντρική διορατικότητα ότι τα όνειρα δρουν ως εκπλήρωση μιας βαθύτερης και ασυνείδητης επιθυμίας.
